The aim of this programme is to enable the learner to build the knowledge, skill and competence required for participation in higher education, including acquiring a broad range of knowledge in an area of personal interest, and key skills for academic research and enquiry.
Work placement / work experience may be a core feature/element of programmes in this field facilitating the enhancement of employability and transversal skills.
On completion of this programme learners will have acquired a broad range of knowledge in an area of personal interest together with key skills for academic research and enquiry. Learners will have the skills, knowledge and competencies to make informed decisions concerning participation in further education or training.
The Back to Education Initiative (BTEI) offers part-time courses for individuals aged 16 and over, with a focus on those who left school with few formal qualifications. BTEI courses are open to EU/EAA Citizens, Refugees, Persons with Leave to Remain in Ireland e.g. Holders of Stamp 4 GNIB Card, and those with Labour Market Access Permission.

If you are unemployed or are in part time employment and meet at least one of the above criteria, you are eligible for the course. Evidence of eligibility will be required.
In terms of language requirements, applicants for BTEI courses need to be at least at an intermediate level, often specified as A2 to B2 on the CEFR.
