Ceramics Class (Hobby Course)

Producing studio Pottery or Ceramic items - i.e. items of clay and other ceramic material not produced in a factory - is something which can be tried by anyone, and taking part in a class is a great way to meet people, get in touch with your creative side, and extend your artistic horizons.

Course Outline

  • Playing with clay - Simple sculptures 
  • Introduction to clay structure and form
  • Introduction to various ceramic building techniques
  • Introduction to clay types and their primary uses
  • Hand Slab building, techniques and possibilities
  • Coil building. Create a pot, plate or cup using the coil method
  • Pinch pot method.  Create a sculpture, vase, cup or pot using this ancient method of creating essential utensils
  • Mold making methods using casting plaster. Create a master copy of a favourite item so duplicates can be made using liquid clay. 
  • Bisque firing the work created to date.
  • Glaze technology: what glazes to use on functional ware and application methods
  • Throwing pots on the potters wheel and adding a colour and glaze to the work fired in previous lessons.

  • Location - Sligo College of Further Education & Training - F91 DY66
  • 5 Weeks (Finishing on 29th April)
  • College closed for Easter break from 30th to 3rd April
