Art & Design (Portfolio Preparation) 5M1984

This course involves practical studio and location work. It enables students to develop drawing and observational skills and to explore creativity and personal expression through a broad range of creative processes including Sculpture, Mixed Media, Printmaking, Painting and Drawing. All projects are broad enough to allow students to develop a portfolio suitable to their particular interests – Fine Art, Design, Animation etc. Visits to various art gallery’s throughout Ireland takes place during the college term to inform, develop and stimulate the students’ knowledge of the arts. Work experience takes place throughout the year. It involves two weeks of work placement, artists talks and weekly tutorials. Learners may also choose to progress their studies into Higher Education through the Higher Education Links Scheme.

This course is designed to

  • Prepare participants for entry to Higher Education colleges.
  • Develop and complete a portfolio of Art & design over eight modules.
  • Prepare learners to acquire a comprehensive range of skills in art, crafts & design.

  • Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied, or equivalent
  • Interview
  • Mature applicants welcome
  • Preference will be given to students who will complete all eight modules

How the course is taught

This is a practical course where learning takes place primarily in an art room.

SCFE has developed a style of teaching to meet the needs of a diverse community of learners.

Whenever possible, we use a Learn-by-Doing approach to make the learning experience more realistic and enjoyable.

We provide learning supports that are tailored to meet the needs of individual learners.

From academic Year 2023 Fine Art Degree programmes will accept applicants directly into stage 2 of the courses
Requirements for Direct Entry are;

  • 3 distinctions in a QQI Art and/or Art and Design Course
  • Interview
  • Portfolio

All applicants by direct entry are advised to also apply to the CAO for a Stage One place
Acceptance for Direct Entry will be made on a rolling basis and early application is advisable

Applications Process for Direct Entry to 2nd Year

  • Applicants apply through the Portfolio Portal
  • When registering on Portal State Direct Entry to Year 2
  • Submit Digital Portfolio and Questionnaire
  • Email Admissions at admissions@itsligo for Direct Entry Application form and fill and return to admissions by email.
  • Interview in person will then be arranged
  • Provisional offers are made after interview
  • Successful applicants submit final results of QQI/PLC course
  • If 3 Distinctions achieved final offer made of place on Fine Art Course
